Welcome to Day of the Region 2016

Day of the Region encourages grass-roots rural community development and cooperation through a locally devised programme of special events and activities to suit particular communities. Day of the Region is about capturing the very essence of life in the rural communities of this region and encouraging more people to participate in the wide range of activities that go on throughout the year. Dumfries and Galloway was the first place in the UK to host the Day of the Region initiative in October 2011 and celebrations have been held in various communities ever since. Day of the Region communities are encouraged to connect with each other, share resources, find new networks and have fun!

Day of the Region aims to encourage all of us to get to know those in our community better, explore what’s on our doorstep and create a greater sense of pride in our own regional identity. Whether you are interested in walking, cycling, photography, crafts or music – or have a love of the countryside, food or history – this is your opportunity to find out more about what is going on in your community and to be part of it!

In this local celebration of rural community life, community volunteers develop a varied programme of events with activities that cater for all ages, abilities and interests. This is your chance to get involved in your community or to explore a neighbouring town or village!

    2016 Communities

Dumfries and Galloway LEADER is delighted to work with these communities as part of Day of the Region 2016:

    Sanquhar

Sanquhar have participated in the initiative for several years. This year the launch will take place with a reception at Sanquhar Town Hall with refreshments and local heritage displays on ‘Growing Up In Sanquhar’. Sanquhar’s Day of the Region programme includes visits to see the animals at Clarks Little Ark and pony rides courtesy of Happy Hooves, PLUS have-a-go sports and games, performances from Sanquhar Silver Band and the Upper Nithsdale Youth Pipe Band and a free community BBQ (all in and around Queensberry Square).

    Glentrool & Bargrennan

Glentrool participated in Day of the Region last year to showcase the potential of The Old School which is managed by the local community trust. This year the group will kick off their weekend celebrations with the launch of local heritage project ‘All Our Yesterdays: Folk, Farming & Forestry’. The programme for Day of the Region includes guided walks from Bruce’s Stone, sun-gazing with special sun-scopes with Galloway Astronomical Society, local artists and craftmakers and a free buffet and beverages. Events take place in and around The Old School.

    Stranraer ARC

A new community to host Day of the Region, Stranraer ARC hope to make better connections with the wider community through their participation. The launch event is a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party with a big cake, a BBQ and plenty of fun and games. The Day of the Region programme starts with the launch of Room 13 – a new dedicated art room at the centre – and also includes activities from the Blether Bus and Beat The Street.

    Kirkconnel & Kelloholm

Building on the success of previous years, Kirkconnel & Kelloholm will launch their celebrations with a mini Tattoo featuring pipers and majorettes. The Day of the Region programme includes a treasure hunt, arts and crafts sessions, a fairy garden and ends with a free community BBQ.

    Annan

Annan participated for the first time in 2015 and the celebrations were a huge success. This year trademark orange balloons will be released at the launch event inbetween the refreshments and entertainment. The Day of the Region programme includes have-a-go sports sessions and a free family BBQ at Annan Academy playing fields, with a free shuttle bus running to and from Annan Harbour Festival.

Day of the Region update – Stranraer ARC

Please update your diaries! Stranraer ARC (Activity and Resource Centre) will now host their Day of the Region celebrations on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th September.

The ARC will launch their Day of the Region events with a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on Friday 9th, which will be followed by a full day of free activities on Saturday 10th to include art and craft workshops in the Centre’s new dedicated art room.

The Activity and Resource Centre in Stranraer was selected to take part in the Day of the Region initiative this year as part of an exciting pilot project.

In previous years, Day of the Region events have typically been organised by communities in a given geographical area (in a town or village).

This year will be the first time the Day of the Region platform is used to celebrate a ‘community of interest’ in an area – namely the people who use Stranraer Activity and Resource Centre, their families and the wider community.

Annan, Glentrool & Bargrennan, Kirkconnel & Kelloholm, Lochmaben and Sanquhar join Stranraer ARC as Day of the Region hosts in 2016.

Now in its sixth year in Dumfries & Galloway, the annual Day of the Region celebrations provide an opportunity for community groups, organisations and individuals with an interest or skill to come together and promote what is available in their area during a concentrated weekend of FREE activities celebrating rural community life.
