Kirkconnel and Kelloholm is a delighted to be part of Day of the Region again in 2013. It is hoped that being involved in the project will increase awareness of what this small community has to offer.

The community has a population of around 2,000 residents and is rated in the top 10 of the most deprived areas in Scotland. Despite this, the community shows true community spirit with a real sense of pride in the local surroundings and an abundance of community groups, organisations and interest groups!

Kirkconnel and Kelloholm will again be showcasing the wide and varied range of skills, interests and community groups which exist within the village and surrounding area and encouraging the community to come along and take part, learn something new and be part of it!

The project is being developed by a hearty group of local volunteers being led by Building Healthy Communities Upper Nithsdale Area Partnership, partner agencies and community representatives who are all ambitious about the outcomes of Day of the Region in ensuring there are events for everyone from the 'young yins' through to the 'over sixties youth club!' all taking part through promoting the local community and what this has to offer therefore ensuring everyone knows what is going on right here on their doorstep! It is hoped that everyone will get a greater understanding of what activities are available to them locally and may even lead to new classes/clubs being established!

The working group hope that Volunteer recruitment, community empowerment and co production will play a big part over the weekend but most of all its anticipated that the community of Kirkconnel and Kelloholm will be showcased to its fullest with visitors from far and wide supporting and attending the weekend's events and gaining a new appreciation of this hidden treasure of Dumfries and Galloway!
