Sanquhar
The Royal Burgh of Sanquhar has a population of just over 2,000 and celebrated 400 years since gaining the royal charter in 1998. In 2010 the Burgh celebrated 100 years of the Riding of the Marches. Sanquhar is delighted to have been selected as a Day of the Region location again in 2013 to deliver a celebration of community life here for everyone to feel part of!
Sanquhar is very proud of its history with the world renowned 'Sanquhar Pattern' and knitting, the covenanters and the riding of the marches. It is also famous as a place Robert Burns frequented regularly and has its own Burns' club; The Black Joan. Sanquhar is also home to the oldest working Post Office in the world!
The Royal Burgh is very proud of the High Street as it has managed to keep small businesses open, it supports 2 butcher shops, chemist, bakery, supermarkets, paper shop, Post Office, fruit and vegetables, furniture store, painter and decorator, property offices with solicitors etc
There is also a thriving primary school and a very good academy with pupils from Sanquhar and Kelloholm area who's talents and achievements are praised all over the region and Scotland!
Everyone gets involved in community arranged events and is one of the major strengths of this rural area - so come on board with Day of the Region and celebrate everythign that makes rural life here in our community so special!
Day of the Region in Sanquhar will involve more than 15 local community groups, the pipe band, silver band and other music groups will provide entertainment and displays. There will be food stalls, arts and crafts sessions, knitting demonstration, camera and photo printing classes, film shows, dance display, boys brigade and girl guide display of work and an opportunity to get your local postcard franked at oldest post office in the world!
Sanquhar are planning a packed programme of activities for all ages, abilities and interests!
